You thought a car crash was bad? Ten years from now it’ll be history, but you’ll still be on the sex offender registry!
If you just stumbled on this article, you’re a day late (but not a dollar short because this awesome blog is FREE!) so take a second to get caught up here… Ready? Let’s go. Since we’ve already covered the first two reasons being on the Michigan sex offender registry is going to suck in a major way, let’s hash this out a little more (as if you needed any more reasons to get yourself a good attorney!)
There are LOADS of rules you have to follow!
Right, so it’s bad enough that everyone knows you’re a convicted sex offender and it affects the way you parent your kids, but that’s only a tiny portion of the inconvenience. Seriously. There are SO. MANY. RULES for registered sex offenders. You think life was rough in lockup? Wait till you get a load of these regulations!
If you’re a registered sex offender in Michigan, you HAVE TO:
- Register with the state police as a sex offender. (Yup, they already know it. But you have to go down there and sign up anyway.)
- Register your address with the state. (They want to know where you live so they can tell everyone else where you live. Nice, right?)
- Report your change of address to the state cops every single time you move. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Miss one? Forget to report your move? Yuh, you might be going back to prison.
- Pay 50 bucks to the state for the pleasure of registering as a sex offender, and then pay them another $50 every year after that as your annual registration fee.
- Tell the state cops about your car. Make, model, license plate number, registration and insurance. They want to know where you’re going and when.
- And your job. They want to know where you work. (Oh, and if you change jobs, you have to report that too!)
- Going to school? Cops need to know about that too. As a registered sex offender, you’re required to report your campus info.
- Maintain an updated driver’s license or state ID. (Let that expire and you could have a cop come knocking on your door.)
- Avoid schools. Like, a 1,000 foot radius avoidance. (Rent a house, or get a job, or just eat a meal at a restaurant that’s within 1,000 feet of a school – you’re so busted!)
- We saved the best one for last – social media. Got a Facebook account? You have to report that to the cops. Email account? Online gaming accounts? Chat rooms you like to visit? Yup, the cops need those too.
What happens if you don’t follow those rules?
Take a wild guess… yup, that’s right. You can go back to prison. Forget to tell the cops you moved? Violation! Which often means prison. Get a new email account and report it? Prison possibilities. Start going to school (because you want to better yourself and get a degree and become a contributing member of society.) Prison. Seriously, if this stuff doesn’t scare you, then we don’t know what will!
Being a registered sex offender is no joke, folks!
